Service Area
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville is proud to provide quality care for children in
South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, and surrounding areas.
History
In 1922, the Shrine of North America opened its first Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in
Shreveport, Louisiana, with the mission to provide expert orthopaedic care to children under 18,
free of charge.
By 1927, Shriners Hospitals for Children had 14 locations operating
across the United States; however, Shriners International had not planned for one of the
locations – Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville.
The Shriners’ Imperial Board of
Trustees did not arrange for a hospital in South Carolina. Shriners Hospitals locations were
selected so that each section of the country would be served and Scottish Rite Hospital in
Atlanta, Georgia, was already treating children from several adjacent states. A Shriner from
Atlanta, Forest Adair, did, however, notice that a large number of applications for admissions
to the Scottish Rite Hospital were for children in South Carolina. Because of this, Adair
believed a similar hospital could thrive in the Palmetto State as well.
To spark interest
for the project, Adair gave several presentations to Hejaz Shrine Temple (chapter) in
Greenville, South Carolina. Adair was able to win over local businessmen and involved members of
Burgiss Charities. W. W. Burgiss, J. B. Duke and B.E. Geer pledged $350,000 to build and equip
the hospital in Greenville.
Burgiss Charities was short $35,000, so Hejaz Temple loaned
the rest to help complete the project.
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville
opened its doors on September 1, 1927, on Pleasantburg Drive. The original hospital saw many
renovations over the years, but in the late 1980s, it became apparent that the facility could no
longer hold the growth it was experiencing. So, in 1989, the Greenville Shriners Hospital moved
near the medical campus of Greenville Memorial Hospital on West Faris Road.
Today, our
state-of-the-art hospital remains open and dedicated to its three-fold mission of treatment,
education and, research.
Our commitment to the community
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville, like the other U.S.-based hospitals in the
Shriners Hospitals for Children health care system, reaffirms its commitment to excellence of
care through the development of its Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The CHNA is a
requirement for tax-exempt hospitals to engage their servicing community every three years and
assess their health needs. Based on the findings, we have developed an action plan to work
alongside community stakeholders to address the health needs of the community.
