The desire for a Shrine Club in Conway became an idea of
several Nobles who were members of the Pedalers and the Rebels
Shrine units, who came together, to form a committee to
investigate the possibility of starting a Shrine Club for the
Nobles west of the Inter-coastal Waterway. Many of these Nobles
and several independent Nobles maintained a membership in the
Myrtle Beach, Loris, Conway (MLC) Shrine Club in Myrtle Beach;
however, these Nobles believed they could support a Shrine Club
in Conway, and the process was started in early 1979.
At a meeting held on August 14, 1979, a study committee was
appointed, consisting of the following Nobles: Doug Martin,
Ernest Hucks, Mack Godwin, O'Neil Cannon, and Linwood Wade, Jr.
Their task was to determine how many Nobles in the Conway,
Aynor, and Loris area would be interested in forming a Shrine
Club in Conway.
On August 28, 1979, a second meeting was held, and a list of
fifty seven (57) Nobles names was submitted who showed an
interest in a Shrine Club in Conway. At this meeting it was
determined that, due to the increasing number of Brothers
joining our Nobility in the Conway, Aynor, and Loris areas,
there was a definite need for a Shrine Club, and it would be
named the WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB. It was also decided the annual
dues would be $20.00 per Noble. (Note the dues were raised to
$25.00 in 1991). This study indicated they had enough support
from the existing Nobility to organize a very strong and active
Shrine Club which would, in effect, be a tremendous unifying
factor to all the Noble Brothers in this area and, consequently,
strengthen our efforts to support the crippled and burned child.
At this time, the following officers of the WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB
were elected: President, Doug Martin; Vice President, Ernest
Hucks; Secretary, Linwood Wade, Jr.; Treasurer, Wilbur Bessant.
On November 1, 1979, the petition to create the WACCAMAW
SHRINE CLUB was submitted to OMAR TEMPLE with fifty-seven (57)
Nobles names signed to it. (Note: We attempted to list the
names; however, we couldn't read some of the names and decided
to not list any. A copy of the list is posted on the Club wall.)
The WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB "members" continued to meet a the
Pedalers building located on Oak Street in Conway (beside
Terrel's Sheet Metal). At these meetings, the Nobles shared the
cooking responsibilities with one Noble cooking each month. The
meetings were held on the 1st Thursday of each month starting at
7:30 p.m. The meeting was later changed to the 2nd Tuesday at
7:00 P. M.
The WACCAMAW SHIRINE CLUB received its charter, and it was
dated December 5, 1979. However, some confusion exists here as
the charter shows the following officers: President, Johnny
Foxworth; Vice President, R. G. Horton; Secretary, John B. Boyd;
Treasurer, Harvey Bryant, and others. (A copy is on the Club
wall.) We believe the Charter listed the 1980 officers.
The WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB members with their NEW CHARTER
continued to meet in the Pedalers' building until it burned to
the ground in 1982. The Club Members then met in various
locations such as the restaurant at Bob's Motel, the Western
Steak House, and the Horry Electric Building.
At the Club meeting held on August 4, 1980 , Noble President
Johnny Foxworth accepted a motion that all members signing up to
join the Club by December 31, 1980 would be made CHARTER MEMBERS
of the WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB. According to the records and club
petitions we could locate, sixty two (62) members were listed in
1980. In each of the following years are the number of petitions
received for that particular year- 1981-10; 1982-1; 1983-2;
1984-18; 1985-16; 1986-20; 1987-12; 1988- 5; 1989-13; 1990-7;
1991-13; 1992- 2; 1993- 5; 1994- 10; 1995- 3; 1996 - 3; 1998- 4;
1999- 15; 2000- 9; 2001- 2; 2002- 3; 2004- 5; for a total of 178
petitions submitted.
In the early operation of the Club, they had a difficult time
meeting the $1,000 Temple quota and on August 28, l980 President
Foxworth announced that the Pedalers had paid $300 toward the
Club's quota.
While continuing to meet at various locations, the members
started looking for a permanent meeting site and on December 4,
1980 Noble Mack Godwin reported to the Club that 1.06 acres was
available with water. sewer, and police protection along the
Waccamaw River near the Conway Marina. ( Tract C owned by Horry
Land Improvement Co. for $22,000 dollars) Noble President Johnny
Foxworth appointed a committee ( Nobles Donnie Todd, Jim
Sessions, Red Horton , and Mack Godwin) to investigate the
possible purchase of that land. The Club members passed a
resolution on January 8, 1981 to obtain a loan from Conway
National Bank to purchase the property and the purchase was
completed in early 1981. After struggling with finances the
first year , Noble G. C. Butler made the problem easier by
offering an interest-free loan, and assumed the loan from CNB.
The members pinned their hopes on someday being able to build a
shrine club on that site. Records indicate that the 1.06 acres
was paid for in full on June 30, 1983.
In 1985, Noble Marshall Godwin became the President of
WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB and, with the help and push of a lot of
Members, started the plans for a building on the river site.
Noble Marshall accepted the Presidency of the Club for two years
in order to complete the building. Many meetings were held with
contractors for metal buildings at Noble Mack Godwin's home.
Nobles Don Ollis, Hubert Watson, Joe Cook and Harvey Bryant
reviewed a lot of plans. Noble Marshall Godwin monitored the
building until it was completed in early 1986. Several Nobles
made major contributions to the building of the club: Nobles
Wendel Smith and Ronald Stalvey provided the carpeting, Noble
Boyd Graham supplied the pecky wall paneling, and Noble John
Boyd provided the landscaping.
In 1980, the Pedalers turned the annual fish fry over to the
Shrine Club for its primary fund raiser. The fish fry, now in
its 31st year, was originally started by Noble Heyward Goldfinch
and other Nobles going to Myrtle Beach and carrying the fish
dinners to Conway for sale. Due to the success of this effort,
they decided to cook the fish in Conway and the fish fry was
held in a tent behind Coastal Mall. In 1981, it was moved to its
present location at the S.C. National Guard Armory, 2002 was
exciting year when the potato cooker caught on fire. In the
spring of 1995, the Club tried its first chickenbog at the
Shrine Club, and for its first effort, the bog was successful
selling 544 dinners, in 2004 we sold over 1500 dinners. In 2001
the Club sponsored its first annul Poker Run.
On June 24th, 1991 several Club members attended the Conway
City Council meeting to request that we have the right to sell
news papers on the streets of Conway and to sell for three (3)
days, the Council unanimously approved our request. Ordinance
#91-07-22 (c).
WACCAMAW SHIRINE CLUB continued to grow and became the
meeting place for several Shrine units, the PEDALER's, the
REBELS, and the WACCAMAW SHRINE LADIES' AUXILIARY, the Omar
Chefs and the Cobras' have joined us.
Several Nobles in the Club indicated a concern over personal
liability should the Club become involved in a lawsuit and a
decision was made to Incorporate . WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB INC. was
formed on May 3, 1988. The Inc. expired in 1991.
The Club has provided the Conway, Aynor, and Loris Nobles
with a place for social gatherings. A tradition has been
established to have several dances each year, usually starting
with the Valentine Dance, a Spring Fling, and Halloween Dance,
followed by a members Christmas party and a Gala New Year's
Party. For several years the Club sponsored Shrine-Mason night
to introduce the Brothers to Shrinedom, records indicate the
first Shrine-Mason was held on Wed. Oct. 1, 1980 at the Conway
Masonic Lodge and the next Shrine-Mason night was held at the
WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB on March 21,1991 with four (4) masonic
couples and one (1) single mason, eleven ( 11) members of the
Divan, fourteen (14) Aides, four (4) District Aides and forty
three (43) Club members present. Our next Shrine Mason night was
held on March 10, 2004 and was well attended- 92 total, with 25
potential mason/shriners. A copy of each respective Shrine-Mason
program is attached.
At the Club meeting on December 4,1980, Illus. Sir Pete Gore
announced he was running for Oriental Guide and in December 1984
the Club informed Omar Temple to purchase the Potentates Flag
($365.10) for presentation to Potentate Pete Gore in January
1985; Also at this meeting Noble Jim Session informed the
members that they would have one hundred eleven (111)
handicapped children, seventy (70) boys and forty one (41)
girls, coming to the Christmas party to be held at S.C. National
Guard Armory in Conway on December 18 and, that after 9:00 P.M.,
they would have an adult party.
Because of its location and accommodations, the Club has
become a popular site for rental. It has been used for weddings,
receptions, city meetings, civil and family courts, family
gatherings, school dances, teachers' meetings, political
meetings, award ceremonies, Las Vegas nights, Casino nights,
fashion shows, etc. The rentals have served as good sources of
income for the Club.
The WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB has been a proud participant in
supporting the CRIPPLED AND BURNED CHILD, OMAR TEMPLE and Camp
Happy Days. The 1995 trophy awards are routine for the Club: 1st
place Candy Sales, 1st place Overall Sales, 2nd place Paper
Sales. (For a complete list , see the attached sheet) In its
25-year history, the WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB has contributed in
excess of $81,661 to the TEMPLE and $ 39,429 to the HOSPITAL. We
could not locate the 1979, 1980, or 1981 reports and assume they
were destroyed in the warehouse fire.( Note -not all hospital
monies pass thru the Club account, some individuals and units
prefer to send it direct.)
Several significant Club events have occurred. One of the
major events was the burning of the mortgage, which was paid in
full on December 14, 1993. Another interesting event is when the
building was built, the back corner of the building was placed 9
inches on the neighboring property and, in 1989, when that
property was purchased by Kingston Pointe, they agreed to a land
swap of 10 feet on the river front for 10 feet on the street
front in exchange for the Club allowing them to place their
channel pilings on Club property. When the Kingston Pointe
Marina was built, the Marina cut off Laurel Street, which was
the street access to WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB, and the City of
Conway deeded the land between old Laurel Street and Elm Street
to the SHRINE CLUB in 1991. However, they retained an easement
on the property for the River Front Walk. In 1993, the Members
decided we had an erosion problem on the river front, and a sea
wall was built to prevent further erosion. To add to the front
appearance, a brick wall was built in 1995. In March 1996 a new
stove and deep fat fryer was added to the kitchen and the vent
and fire extinguisher system was installed.
The Club operation is overseen by its elected officers. The
President is responsible for overall operation of the club. The
1st Vice President is responsible for building management,
dinner at the monthly meeting and for the Club's entertainment.
The 2nd Vice President is responsible for the Club's Fund
Raising. ( Additional duties are described in the By-Laws) .
These officers are supported by the Secretary, the Treasurer, a
5 member Board of Directors, each member is elected for 2 years
on a staggered term, with the past President serving as
Chairman, a 4-member Board of Trustees (also elected for a 2
year staggered term), and various committees (Visitation,
Maintenance, Membership, etc.) It is generally accepted that the
officers follow the rule of progression to the next higher
office.
The WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB has tried other fund raisers besides
the fish fry, such as bingo, yard sales, boat and gun raffles,
bass tournaments in 1998 & 99. etc. Bingo was conducted in the
Club building by the Rebels Shrine unit, who had an agreement
with the Club to divide the profits fifty-fifty, although
partially successful, it required a lot of volunteers, and it
was difficult to comply with the S.C. Tax Commission rules and,
after 3 years (1987-1990), was stopped. In 1991, the Club held a
Vidalia Onion Sale ( 10,000 lbs.) and besides a few rotten
onions, made a little money. Purchase of the onions was made by
an outside friend; therefore, the Club had nothing to lose. In
1992, a cookbook was developed with the members' favorite
recipes, and they sold very well. The Club supported the Temple
during the May Ceremonies in Myrtle Beach by providing the
Candidates and Nobles with chicken dinners at the Myrtle Beach
Convention Center from 1988 thru 1993 and was reimbursed by the
Temple for the Candidates and Staff dinners, with a guarantee of
400 dinners.
The day after hurricane Hugo ( Oct. 89), the Club opened to
collect clothes, toys etc. for the storm victims and all items
received were given to the Salvation Army for distribution. WBTW
TV 13 was there to publicize our efforts. During hurricane Floyd
the Club received some water damage to the ceiling & floors and
the air conditioning units were put on a raised platform. Our
back steps were found at the Conway Marina.
In 1984, a building construction plaque was started. For a
$100 donation, members or the general public could have their
name listed and, as of Jun. 2004, sixty three names are listed.
Other significant events-in 1991 the presidents wall picture
frame boards were started, in 1993 the sea wall was installed,
in 1999 the River front benches were purchased in Charleston and
picked up by President Colie Metts and Noble Don Ollis and
placed on the river front. In l995 the stage and dance floor was
moved to the corner of the ballroom. The Deck was added in 2001
and the grounds were re-landscaped. In 1998 we had the new
stainless fish cooker built and sold our 12 iron panned cooker,
also a storage shed was purchased to store the new cooker and
equipment and Noble Donnie Todd allowed us to construct the
metal shed on his property on US 501. In 2000 the kitchen and
bar floors were tiled. In 2004, thanks to Nobles O'Neil Cannon
and Ed Deaver, the main ballroom was refinished with new
ceilings, air condition vents and floors; and the club purchased
new tables and chairs.
The membership in the Club has varied from a high of 136
members to the present 60 members of which 15 are life-time
members. All the Past Potentates (4) who are members of the
WACCAMAW SHRINE CLUB have been granted life memberships, also
some life members were awarded for meritorious service to the
club and shrinedom in general. During an earlier period life
memberships could be purchased on an age-rated system, and
several members have purchased them. In 1997 the by-laws were
changed to abolish the purchase of life memberships. The club
initiated a 2004 incentive program to gain membership into the
club, by offering to waive the initiation fee on new members and
to former members to pay the current years dues to renew
membership. The club mailed 181 letters to Nobles in the area
announcing this program and the results are still coming in.
In 1991, a dinner and fashion show was held for the Ladies
Auxiliary in appreciation of their support of the WACCAMAW
SHRINE CLUB. The Ladies have supported the Club with their
contributions of money, purchase of fans, serving the dinner at
our meetings every month, assisting with the fish fry and
chicken bog ,and decorating the club for parties. The Ladies
meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
The Clubs "archives" are located in the Conway National Bank
( 3rd Ave.) vault and contain the following documents:

Dear Illustrious Sir;
We the following Nobles who have signed our names to the
en-closed petitions, respectfully submit for your approval this
proposal for the granting of a charter for a Shrine Club in the
Conway area.
On August 14,1979, a study committee consisting of the
following Nobles: Doug Martin, Ernest Hucks, Mack Godwin, O'Neil
Cannon, and Linwood Wade, Jr., were elected by the Nobles in the
Conway, Aynor, and Loris area to determine how many
Nobles were interested in having a Shrine Club in Conway, S. C.
On August 28, 1979, a second meeting was held and the
enclosed petitions of Nobles were submitted as showing an
interest for a Shrine Club in Conway. At this meeting it was
decided that due to the increasing number of Brothers joining
our Nobility in the Conway, Aynor, and Loris areas there was a
definite need for a Shrine Club,and that it would be named the
Waccamaw Shrine Club. Also it was decided that the annual dues
would be twenty ($20.00) dollars per Noble. This study
also indicated we have enough support from the existing Nobility
in this area to
organize a very strong and active Shrine Club, Which would in
effect be a tremeribus unifying factor to all the Noble Brothers
in this area and consequently strengthen our efforts to support
the cripple and burned child. We trust this proposal will be
looked upon favorable by you and ask that if you have any
questions concerning this please do not
hesitate to contact any of the following Nobles
